The Program

ImageKarl Jacobs, “Reenactment Guy”.

Samuel M. Camp (also known as  Karl Jacobs, husband of Sandy) wore the revolutionary war uniform that was worn by the Germans in the War of Independence. (What the hell were they doing in our war).  He frequently speaks to 5th graders about his endeavor and uniform.  5th grade level is a bit much for us, but we got most of it.

I know he “dons” that uniform at home on those special occasions when he and Sandy turn the lights down low, put on their favorite civil war music,  and “reenact” those romantic moments of another time.  That “dashing young man”  is called upon to be brave, salute the flag, and stay awake til at least 9:30 and making sure the dishes are done.Image

(Note:  Thanks Jack for the fine pictures, I couldn't make the text flow around so it looks somewhat disjointed, aren't we all)

Samuel Camp (a distant relative of Karl’s) was born in 1750, Bill thinks he knows him.  Karl read from his Journal. He brought flags from that time and Bill Mason recognized both.  They had 13 stars’s and Bill wondered where the extra stars come from.   He talked about the battle of Yorktown.

The Purple Heart originated during the war.  In 1932 it came back into being for “meritorious service”.    Every time I see a purple heart I tear up. Image

So what is the life of a “Reenactment” person.  Click here and you will get an idea.  http://voices.yahoo.com/life-civil-war-reenactor-8280849.html  Karl was involved in the Re Enactment of Yorktown.   I think the North won, Tom things the South won and it is still going on.  Tennessee is still fighting that war.  Give it up guys.

If you want to know more about this battle and what else went on during this period so click here.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Yorktown

I have not read enough about the Civil War but it really is the bloodiest of them all with Brother fighting Brother, and Sons fighting their fathers.  I cannot imagine living during that time and going to war against those I love.  Wives were allowed to go as well and they received pay (only ½ what their husbands received).  I never would have thought about that.    If the Women of Rotary were in that war whatever side they were on would have won.   Elyse would have wanted to be the first woman in the war.

Thanks Karl for letting us peak into the world of the Re Enactor and letting us see you in uniform.  (Curious if you went to the rest room in uniform and if anyone came in, saw you, and turned around quickly to go out the door.  Just curious.  That fella probably went over to the Marriot).

SPECIAL NOTE:  Before you come to the meeting tomorrow -- look in your garage for a basket for Shannon.  She is working tirelessly for the Ed Foundation and a basket would make her very happy.  She’ll fill the basket, wrap it, put some prizes in it, and raffle it off for $$$ to put into the fund which will help our kids get smart, go to College and then on to a big career so that they can pay a lot of income tax and support us as we get older.  Everyone wins, and it only costs us a basket.  (I feel like I should sing “A Tisket a Tasket here, but don’t know what a Tisket is, let alone a tasket).  Oh well, bring a basket, help Shannon... OK.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor,

I hear tell that you all are planning a party to honor “Stompin” Tom Forsyth.  Well, I am from the same area as Tom down here in Tennessee in a small town called Woodpecker Holler and can’t believe you will honor that boy.  I have a good mind to come up there to the land of fruits and nuts and tell you a few things about Tommy Boy when this “celebration” begins.  We never thought he would amount to a hill of beans; always “struttin” around like a peacock and asking everyone to call him “Supreme Commander” and such.  Shussssh,  I tell ya.  Some of us just may hop on a bus right now and come up and tell you the truth about old Stompin Tom.  We may kick some ass too.   When is it?  I may bring some of his old girl friends along.  The Dawson Twins were something weren’t they Tommy Boy.   I have pictures.  They have some stories, oh yea they do.  None of them ever did get married.   What kind of vittles are ya servin up?  Can you have a bottle of Jack set up for me?
