The Meeting

Mari brought an associate who was at one time a Rotarian,

Kevin Introduced a Rotarian Visitor Chuck Perlman from the Culver City Club.  We love Chuck and see him quite a bit.

Melissa told a great joke, making fun of the Irish.  It was a joke about telling a joke, and it was told very well.   I loved #94, Great Joke and I laugh thinking about it.  It was much better than #92.  You had to be there.
We received a thank you card from Julia’s daughter thanking us for Julia’s celebration of life.  She indicated we “captured her mother’s essence”, and we did.  Rest in Peace.

Jack appealed to us “Every Rotarian, Every Year”.  That is a “cornerstone” part of Len’s year.  You know doubt will be hearing more about that.
We need to sell more tickets for the Mayor’s Good Friday Breakfast on April 18, 2014.

Shiela talked about Community Wellness and we need some more raffle prizes.
One of the best events of the year (That’s what Dean said) is the District Breakfast and it is great training for the new officers and New Members.  It is in Carson on May the 10th, which is a Saturday.

Melissa inducted a new Member, Becky Haynes.  She was sponsored by Deborah Terrill.

The Program

This is all about providing safe harbor for “Battered Women”.  There are two words that should never be said.  They shouldn’t be in the same sentence, the same paragraph, or the same letter.  What a horrible thing that is depicted by these two words.  I am a self-confessed “Polly Anna”.  There is a world out there I know nothing about, and if I had my way I would not want to know about it.
But that’s the world we are in.

They were founded in 1972 and last year helped about 25,000 women and children.  The women that talked to us were Licensed Therapists.  They seemed so together and they deal with extremely sorrowful situations.  First of all the provide Shelter for the battered.  They provide food, legal advice and lots of advice and council for up to two years to be independent of violence.  This counciling can be every day.
They spoke with conviction, and concern.  They spoke of the funding they receive from government grants which are very specific on what that money will be spent upon.

For the most part their Shelters are in unknown locations to keep them from the batterer.

These strong women were very impressive and we were all very impressed.

They have an excellent web page.

NCAA Bracket Competition was won by Debbie.  Second was Gary's dog Walter, 3rd was Johnny Danger (not sure who he is, but he showed well).   Ted and Tom were behind these elite 3 and they should be very happy with their mediocre performance.   Dean and Ed challenged, but faded in the end.  If they start reading now about College Basketball they may be ready to compete next year.  With Dean at the helm we will no doubt have many a chance to gamble.  For those of you that invest with Dean he has this great new program that he collaborates with a fella by the name of Bernie and it is the March Madness Fund.

Last place was a tie with our Barrister Dave tying my wife Mary on the last week.  Dave at one time new sports, but has not studied the teams since he graduated from college.  He spends many a night watching films of himself scoring a lone touch down and thinks of what might have been.  She was proud of our dog Walter doing so well and coming in ahead of Tom.

This was so much fun and it is not about the money, but Paul Harris picked up $100 and some of us have bragging rights (Right Debbie).  Right Walter (Woof!)
