The Meeting

As most of you know, I am the CUB reporter who stands in for the awesome Gary Wilson. Gary emailed
me that he would miss this meeting. That email emboldened me to grab his usual seat which is the best
in the house (and I also hoped that some of his prestige would rub off on me – a fervent but unrequited
hope – especially when Joe Harding humiliated me by publicly calling on me to assume the joke telling
role. More in a few moments).

Our Supreme Commander called the meeting to order and we recited the pledge of allegiance. By the
way, I noted that the Supreme Commander has apparently ceded his position already even though he is
still in office until June. He’s dropped the title “Supreme Commander”.

Soon to be “Supreme Commander Emeritus”, Tom inspired us with quotations from John Wooden, the
famed coach. My two favorite inspirational quotes by Coach Wooden are:

  • Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out.

  • If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?

Ed Su provided the prizes. He’s certainly decadent – all prizes were booze and chocolates. No wonder
we are a raucous bunch most of the time.

Sandy Jacobs introduced her guest, Carol Atkinson. She has been to three of our meetings now (I think) -
so Dean – get on the ball and hook her in as a new member.

The Joe Show (Fining and a Power Grab)He noted that Chevron has put together an advisory council composed of residents of El
Segundo and Manhattan Beach. Nearly 50% of the El Segundo members are also members of
our Rotary Club. Joe wonders how that happened (thanks Lily) and pointedly asked what the
Council was going to do about gas prices. Probably nothing. $100 fine each.

Joe moved on to Claire – she recently played the role of a Mafia wife in a TNT production. Claire
reports that there’s lots of drama in the production and just by her comments, there’s LOTS of
drama. She’ll let us know when the production is in the theatres or at least on TNT or in the can
as they say in the movie business. Joe fined her for being a drama queen.

Shannon got Joe a couple of boxes of Oreos in various configurations. Always grateful for Oreos,
Joe told Shannon he would make a full Oreos shopping list. AND HE FINED HER.

Melissa had the joke of the day which was reasonably funny. However, the telling of the joke required a
Svedesh accent. She struggled with the accent – at times sounding as though she grew up in the Bronx,
or just got off the boat from Germany or grew up in Ireland or came from Natchez, Mississippi or Sicily.
It inspired Joe Harding to bring a formal motion for my return to joke telling. As much as I wanted to do
it, I thought it was more than I could handle. I declined.

The Great Leader reminded us of the Mayor’s Good Friday Breakfast on Friday, March 29 th, 20013 (Good
Friday, of course). $20.00 per person. We will likely have a couple of tables. This is a special tradition in
El Segundo. The Hacienda is hosting it with a number of speakers and the El Segundo HS Choir. Tom’s
daughter is in the choir so it will be good. The time is 6:45 a.m. but because of the popularity of the
Breakfast, you may want to plan on being at the Hacienda around 6:30 a.m. If you have not yet paid the
bill or arranged to put it on your bill, please see Ted at Thursday’s meeting.

Melissa asked for support for her walk on behalf of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. As we know her son
has MS and Melissa has worked diligently to raise funds for the Society. She continues her tradition this
year as well. April 6th is the date for her walk and any donation will be greatly appreciated. The Multiple
Sclerosis Society supports medical research into causes and hopefully a cure for MS. Their goal is to raise
$250,000,000 to battle this debilitating disease. Last year Melissa was 29 th in raising funds through her
walk and other donations. Help support her good work and pray for a solution finding the cause and
cure of this terrible disease. For donations, please either call Melissa or see her at our next meeting.

Our speakers for the meeting were Sammy Pyon, DC and Audrey Pyon, MA, MBA. Sammy and Audrey
are former members of our Rotary Club and friends of all of us. They own and operate El Segundo
Family Chiropractic at 100 W. Imperial Ave., Ste N, El Segundo, CA 90245. Several months ago, they
approached us about a Health and Wellness Day in El Segundo, the net proceeds from which would be
donated to our Rotary Club in exchange for our helping organize and execute the Health and Wellness
Day plan. They are meeting with good success recruiting businesses, professionals and health related
organizations (e.g. EMTs from the El Segundo Fire Department to teach CPR). They have 20 committed
participants and are turning the checks in to Ted as they come in. Dr. Pyon cited some statistics which
showed that while the United States was the leader in health care costs we were not the leader in
health care results. The purpose of the Health and Wellness Day is to familiarize the attendees with
lifestyles that will encourage healthful activities and an awareness of the services that are available to
help a person achieve those goals as well as skills that could save someone’s life. The Wellness Day will
be a high profile event – held on the front lawns of the High School on Main Street.

As promised, more on Ed Su’s prizes further pressing us into decadent behavior and debauchery:

1. Sheila had the raffle ticket for the big payoff. No luck. The pot lives on.
2. Bill Mason won a bottle of wine. He instantly gave it to Julia proclaiming he no longer drinks.
Right, Bill!
3. Marsha Hansen won the next bottle of wine. But she deserved it. She is at the center of every
project in El Segundo. She’s indefatigably “up”. Now we know why!
4. Joe Harding was next in line for a bottle of wine. That was no surprise.
5. Pastor Scott (guest) won one of the impressive boxes of chocolates. The caffeine in the
chocolate should wire him up for his next sermon.
6. Last, Sheila – wait, this was her second possible prize – another chocolate box. She’ll share it
with us next week, we are certain.

Tom gonged the end of the meeting and we all responded with a “yes SIR”.
