The Meeting

Tom made a few bucks with Pins and Badges.  This was the first time I wore both, I am clean.  He picked a bit on Kevin, nice to take the heat off of me for a change.  Go Kevin.  Tom took me to the Chamber Mixer at Mattel this week as his date.  He behaved…sort of.  We giggled a bit and talked behind peoples back.  What a mixer, what food, thanks Marsha and Mattel.  You do it right.  Speaking of RIGHT, the got the El Segundo Citizen of the Year right…our own Sandy Jacobs.  Was she surprised or what, but she was the only one in the room that was surprised.  Everyone else was sure she had won it before.  She is so neat and if you don’t know her very well take the time.  You will meet a very smart and savvy and compassionate person.  Congratulations Sandy, well deserved.

There was a Full House for the Meeting.  Standing Room Only.

Elyse did some fining of those that attended the Distinguished Speaker Series and saw Vicente Fox, former president of Mexico.  Michelle, Julie, Joe and Sandy, and Marsha and Lily all had attended .

Make drugs legal was the message from Vicente  and poverty is the biggest problem in the world.  Every one was impressed with him.  How much do you know about your neighbors to the South, and to the North for that matter.  Can you tell me how many states there are in Mexico, and how many provinces there are in Canada?  Can you name them in either direction?  It is a good time to go to Wickipedia if you don’t.

Joe got fined twice.  Good.  It’s about time we turned the table.  As one who get’s fined a fair bit I was glad to see Mr. Confidence catch a little crap.  Mr. Oreo Fetish I call him.  He Oggles Oreo's every chance he gets.  Elyse has a new cat named…guess what -- Oreo.  Joe was going to check him out and Elyse told him not to eat her cat.  "Cat Oreo’s" …I don’t think they will catch on.

It was nice to see Jeami again.  She looked great and has moved to another part of town. Elyse apparently had something to do with that, and being  the “Fine Master”  -- she fined Jeami.  There was a lovely and  lively repartee between Jeami and Elyse.  You’re good at it Elyse, and Jeami is very good at being the straight “man” for Elyse.  Well done.

Lorena was there.  We don’t see here that often, but did you know that she was once the Rotarian of the Year.  Well-deserved  I might ad.  I got to sit by her.  I think Dick dumped me.  Lorena is much better looking than Dick.  No offense Dick.  Pretty is Pretty.

Laura got fined too.  Miss Alabama always gets fined.  Laura had some long, long high heals.  I think they have a nick name but I can’t say it here.  She showed them to the crowd and she was going to model them that evening at the Girls Night Out event raising money for the Ed Foundation. Tom and I didn't go to that event to see.  Perhaps Laura can wear them to the next Rotary Meeting.  My guess is she would get fined again.

Kevin got fined for having the fire guys in raincoats (Julie Warner got excited thinking that was all they had on)  raising money for the MDA -- $20,000 plus each year.  Raincoats only, hmmm.  Julie was going to go by the corner again to make a donation., and perhaps again.  She is sooo generous..

The Tree musketeer’s thanked us for $500 donation.  Dean gave some cards out.  One to Penny who had a Birthday, and Lorena had an anniversary.  Penny’s card was very funny (one of Floyds), Dean’s card was sentimental…and sweet, like Dean.  (Thanks for the ride today Dean.  If you haven't been to Dean's office in the center of town, you should.  He is a collector and a sports enthusiest and will make you feel very much at home.  Bring your check book and he will invest your money for you.

Wayne came in a little late, and it was like norm coming into “Cheers” as greetings came from around the room.  It’s a tough room, and when you come a few minutes late, you will get hazed.  Wayne’s cool though.  If he could have ordered a Beer(just like Norm) he would have; or perhaps a tequila.

A couple of “Julies”  each told a very good joke.  One was about sleeping with animals, and the other was about large Bra’s.   I am not sure guys could tell these jokes today, but women can.  Times have changed.  Girls tell dirty jokes, and guys share recipe's, niether smokes.

No meeting next week because of Thanksgiving.  Eat your Turkey at Home or Someone Elses House

The Program  (Nice Introduction…Go ahead Scott)

Scott “Sieple”(sp)  Compliance Coordinator.

He Oversees the onsite contractors as they relate to "compliance issues",  and the site itself for Environmental and Compliance Issues.

He also manages the waste management function and the 500 construction guys on site and about 150 Engineers.  They all must have additional training on these compliance issues.  A Big Job; lots of People; lots of problems to solve some reasonable, some not so reasonable (my comments).  Took 5 years to get the first license, and 5 more years to get a second license.

Environmental  issues are and/or may be Waste Management; Dust Management; or Clean Air Management in general.  As mentioned before All “Contractors” have to go through special Environmental Training.  He also looks for Biological, Habitat, Archeology and Relics etc.   Any of these issues that become apparent or are discovered, or it is believed that they may exist,  can and do shut down the work site till they are resolved with the various compliance agencies.

Dick asked what percentage of the total cost was for these "compliance" issues.  Answer:  90% of equipment is to control the environmental and other compliance issues.  I am not sure I heard that right, or that I understand that, but it seems out of whack to me. Perhaps Alex can elaborate for us at a later date.   (If they find a bottle (yes even a Budweiser Bottle) that is over 50 years old, they have to have someone from an agency come take a look while all this “talent” then has to back off for a bit to decide what to do with the bottle.  Or shells that might have been arranged for some purpose, or  Libby's Applesauce bottle that may have been over 50 years old.    I would guess they would find some 50 year old Beer Bottles in Floyd’s yard.  No digging there please.     I don’t get all this stuff, but I guess they are political issues so I am just going to leave it at that.

Well, Thanksgiving is upon us and I am grateful for being a part of Rotary and all my Rotary Friends.  Enjoy the next few days, they are very special for all of us in the US.  I have some new clients and they came from Russia 7 years ago and they tell me every chance they get how lucky we are to be in America. They are becoming American Citizens and they love this country.  They are buying their first house and they are thrilled.  They are very grateful and so am I.
