The Meeting

Shannon received her Paul Harris Pin …and she was grateful, and we are grateful to have her.  She is indeed a go getter.   I had a chance to share the ticket selling booth with her at the Wellness Day  for a while and she is not timid and can really sell, well, just about "anything" because that was what many of the prizes were -- at the very successful Wellness Day event put on by Sammy and Jack with the help of the El Segundo Rotary Club.  It was really neat for a second year event and will only get better.  I bet Shannon raised at least $1000 by selling tickets, one at a time to five at a time.  It was a pleasure to get to know you better my new Paul Harris friend.  She told me she at one time sold "knock of perfume" in parking lots.  That's a very tough sale unless Tom and Jack happen to be walking buy and they were feeling a little frisky.  But, that's another story.

Visitors

Len introduced Bill Bloomfield who is a Past President of Manhattan Beach Rotary Club and is currently the Assistant Governor.

Nancy introduced Steve Eno, head of the Robotics Club at the High School.  He was part of the subsequent program.  The Robotics Team

Floyd brought his grandson, someone got a free lunch.  I think it may be Floyd.

Jim McLeese told the joke again, very cute chip monk story, suitable for children.  There was a pun “punch  line” which made our future President laugh and laugh and laugh.  Len's life is simple.  It turns out he loves Puns, and plans on “punning us” at least once a week.   Who can possibly "love puns".  That will be real Punishment if it goes on too long.  Who is the next President after Len.  That would be Dean, House Gambler.

Julie Warner had a birthday, and gave an emotional thank you to Melissa and Randy for helping her.  She simply said “Thank you” and cried out of gratefulness because they let her use their travel trailer.  It must be one hell of a trailer.  Sometimes us Rotarian's wear our hearts on our sleeves.  Julie is a beauty, she really "cares", about everything.  That's a good thing Julie and we love you.

Jeami and Paul had their 6th Anniversary.  Jeami read the card.  She has a very good delivery.  I think she should be the joke teller some month.  How about it Jeami.

Sandy and Carl had an Anniversary, number 49.  Floyd would say that is a “good start”.  They had ice cream that night.

Melissa had a birthday and picked out her own card.  It was very funny.  Melissa's funny and has a good eye for humor.

Sammy and Jack spoke a bit about the Wellness Day.  They both thanked each other for their efforts, and then thanked each other for thanking each other…..  They, along with Audrey, should really be thanked by the club in a big way because it turned out to be one hell of a great day…more on that later.

Len then sucked up a bit to the visiting Assistant Governor.

Shiela is organizing for the 4th of July Celebration.  How many clowns.

(note:  I don't know how to spell Sheila or Shiela's name, and that goes for Jeami or Jamie as well.  I am not sure they know either)

Nov. 9th Paul Harris Dinner, we have 20 tickets at $85 apiece and we get to  see the Space Shuttle Endeaver.  It sounds pretty neat to me.

Debbie thanked everyone for their donations of toys to the mini toy drive she volunteered to do.  She was grateful.

Frank’s son received an award as the most outstanding Freshman on the running team.  His name is Gavin.  (I don't think I know how to spell his name either.  It may be Gaelic)

Demotion Party is on June 29, 2013.  I hope someone shows up.

The Program

Today’s program was about Robotics, and were we impressed.  Apparently the United States now  lags behind the rest of the world in STEM programs (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, that spells STEM Joe).

The Coach of the Robotics Team is A teacher  and former El Segundo  student  and graduated in 2002 He then went on to John Hopkins and earned a degree in Electrical Engineering in 2006.   That’s not easy and was he sharp, likeable, good looking, confident, and fun.  Nice combo.  Not sure if he was married but hey someone might want to give him a call.  I’ll call him.  This is California

Then the students themselves stood up by the slide screen and quite frankly they looked a little nervous, a little introverted, somewhat geeky, and serious…until….they talked.  None of these judgments were accurate.  They were all very articulate, funny, and confident.. But not too much so; and very likeable.  They obviously love their chosen fields of science.  They were all pretty sure what avenue of work they were going to pursue upon graduation.

It was fun to listen to their various projects as they spoke with pride about building hover craft including Ion lifters which detect something;  a self-deploying solar shade;   an autonomous rover that would be ready for anything.   It’s just basic engineering stuff.   Some of us are currently taking night classes learning things.  I saw Tom’s curriculum and it included Camp Ground Maintenance,  and proper water etiquette.

Someone asked What are 3D Printers which we are seeing more and more in the news.  One of the students explained to us simply that they really do computer modeling which is a rapid prototyping extruder head built on top of a robotic gimble.   You can make guns, clocks, and all kinds of stuff.   Tom was smiling.  He had some ideas on what he would like to make.  He see’s himself cloning himself for others to enjoy, the Supreme Commander that he is.  Len was not short on dreaming either as he sees in the not too distant future his Presidential Destiny.  Two Presidents and a machine that can clone them.  Wow.  Len could be the Supreme, Supreme  Commander.    I am out of here.  GW  PS.  No mention of Joe or Elyse in this bulletin.  They will be pissed.

A Big Thanks for Jack for the Wellness Day Event.  Here is a picture of him hard at work.  it is tough, but someone has to do it.  What a trooper.
