Happy Leap Year month! We are now less than two months out to our upcoming Malt Madness beer & wine event coming up on March 27th. Planning for this fundraiser is now underway and we need your help! We are looking for Sponsors, donations, and beer, wine and food vendors. If you have any leads, please contact Dean Seligman or visit the event page and following the links for documents and details. This is a major fundraiser for our club and we need the support of our members to help make this happen smoothly. Thank you in advance for your support!
This weekend, our rotary president elect for 2020-2021, Valerie Smith, attended the PETS educational training program. It was a great opportunity to meet other presidents and learn more about club leadership!
Great meeting today with Aaron Corkin of El Segundo PD. We learned a little about him and a lot about the Community Police Academy program that’s being taught by the El Segundo Police Department. This program gives residents and community members the rare opportunity to learn about the different topics of police work, their internal structure, and learn a few basic tactics for safety, detective work, and human restraint. We also welcomed a few members of the high school Interact club to our meeting and saw a short video of Mr. Beasley, a Rotarian himself, honoring his granddaughter Shelby with a Paul Harris Fellow award.
Nearly every four years, we add an extra day to the calendar in the form of February 29, also known as Leap Day. Put simply, these additional 24 hours are built into the calendar to ensure that it stays in line with the Earth’s movement around the Sun. While the modern calendar contains 365 days, the actual time it takes for Earth to orbit its star is slightly longer—roughly 365.2421 days. The difference might seem negligible, but over decades and centuries that missing quarter of a day per year can add up. To ensure consistency with the true astronomical year, it is necessary to periodically add in an extra day to make up the lost time and get the calendar back in synch with the heavens.
February is Peace and Conflict Prevention / Resolution Month
Millions of people all over the world are currently displaced by armed conflict or persecution. In fact, 90% of casualties in armed conflicts are civilians, half of which are children. Through service projects and Rotary programs, the Rotary family is committed to pursuing projects that address the structural causes of conflict, including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources.
Rotarians train adults and young leaders to prevent and mediate conflict, and aid refugees who have fled dangerous areas. During February, Rotary Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution Month, we’re celebrating our commitment to build peace and Rotarians train adults and young leaders to prevent and mediate conflict, and aid refugees who have fled dangerous areas.
