Message from Val
It is hard to believe that I am about to end my Rotary Presidency. It seemed like such a long time from the moment I was asked to be President Elect until I took over as President and then this last year has gone by so fast. We haven't been able to raise a lot of money, but I feel like we've done a lot of good in the community.  From continuing our senior shopping program to getting a grant to give 24 veterans sleeping bags to having a successful online Polio Plus raffle and a successful first Mother's Day Fundraiser,  to giving out mini grants to teachers and 3 College Scholarships,  I am very pleased with what we've accomplished this year. I appreciate everyone in the club who has stepped up to participate in events and in the formulation of the strategic plan which will be a good guide for future presidents to select and choose what they would like to try out in their years.
Thank you all for making this year very special for me.

We heard from James Moll, one of the owners and Edward Torres, pipe organist. We were treated to a special private demonstration of the mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ and a short clip of a silent movie with live organ music. What an amazing meeting!

Demotion Party 2021
Farewell Val! We will miss our 2020-2021 Rotary President! To celebrate her departure we got together at the ADM for dinner, beer & wine, and many laughs as Val handed out awards and gave recognition to rotarians who went the distance during this past year. The evening ended with a funny skit and a heart warming group photo.
Val's Last Meeting
On 6/24/21 we had our last meeting under Val's leadership at Upshift Brewery. We congratulated our 2021 Rotarian Scholarship winners and presented them with checks: Cooper Stolnack 1st Place $4000, Trinity Sansalin Parascandola 2nd Place $2000, Thomas Davies 3rd Place $1000. We also gave recognition to several rotarians for their service to our club and inducted our newest member Ryan Danowitz of El Segundo PD. Meeting 5/27/21
~ FEATURED SPEAKER ~ Millicent Hill, founder of Mama Hill's Help. She gave us an update on her projects since Covid started. Millicent Hill is a retired school teacher with LAUSD. Over her 45-year career as an award-winning educator, poet, and activist, Millicent has changed the lives of thousands of youngsters through her innovative teaching style. Today she and her small staff cover an array of issues within the core curricula-from anger management to teen pregnancy-as most of her youngsters are living under the cloud of violence, grief, abandonment or abuse, which all too often impedes their ability to learn.

~ FEATURED SPEAKER ~ Dave Bader from Marine Mammal Care Center Los Angeles
https://marinemammalcare.org
MMCC Los Angeles is a non-profit hospital for seals and sea lions that strand on the 70+ miles of beaches from Malibu to Seal Beach due to illness, injury and malnutrition. MMCC has provided top-notch care for marine mammals in need since 1992, with the goal of rehabilitating and releasing them back to their ocean home.
MMCC also promotes the ocean conservation through education, research, and partnerships. Supporters value ocean stewardship, wildlife conservation, and sustainability. They operate under a permit from the National Marine Fisheries Service to implement the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972.
As the only year round marine mammal rehabilitation facility in Los Angeles County, MMCC is one of the busiest in the country, admitting on average over 350 patients per year. MMCC is located in San Pedro near the Port of Los Angeles, on property owned by Los Angeles Unified School District.

History of the Rotary Wheel

A wheel has been the symbol of Rotary since our earliest days. The first design was made (1905) by Chicago Rotarian Montague Bear, an engraver who drew a simple wagon wheel, with a few lines to show dust and motion. The wheel was said to illustrate "Civilization, Movement and Service work in action." Most of the early clubs had some form of wagon wheel on their publications and letterheads.

In 1922, it was decided that all Rotary clubs should adopt a single design as the exclusive emblem of Rotarians. So, the present gear wheel, with 24 teeth and six spokes was adopted by the "Rotary International Association." The gear teeth around the outside represent the fact that work is to be done. The six spokes represent the inner direction and path of our Vocational Service, through the representation of our membership via the classification system. Similarly, these same spokes represent an outward distribution path of Rotary's ideals of service and the Four Way Test… going out toward the community, vocations and businesses that our members represent.

A group of engineers advised that the geared wheel was mechanically unsound and would not work without a "keyway" in the center of the gear to attach it to a power shaft. So, in 1923 the keyway was added to signify the wheel was a "worker and not an idler". The keyway in the center of the hub is of great significance, because it represents the individual Rotarian member, who is the key factor in every club. Quality members are the keys, needed for the hub to engage with the shaft and turn, putting the energy into motion and creating the power for the gears to do their work.

At the 1929 Rotary International Convention, it was determined that blue and gold would be the official colors of the organization, so the wheel was designed with these colors. The four blue bands within the outer radius of the gear represent our four avenues of service. And the design which we now know was formally adopted as the official Rotary International emblem.

The Rotary wheel is also referred to as "The Mark of Excellence".

What does Rotary mean to me?        #ProudRotarians

Rotary is Friendship. Rotary is Diversity. Rotary is Service. Those are the three things that come to mind when I ask myself that question.

First of all friendship. Friends that I would never have come into contact with if not for Rotary. Friends from all different walks of life. Friends that I have developed a bond with both within, and more important, outside of Rotary. Friends that I have turned to when there is was no one else around.

Diversity. Not necessarily in the 2020 meaning as much as the myriad of ways to give back and get involved. I started my Rotary career focused on the great community based things Rotary does. That has evolved to include international outreach as well. It has made Rotary more meaningful to me. To be a part of something much larger than myself and my community would not be possible without Rotary.

Service. Of course Service above Self but more important a vehicle to continue to serve when the normal years of school and youth activity service wanes. Where we’d normally settle into more inward aspects and find that opportunities would not come along as easily. Rotary is all about opportunity to serve. It’s what makes Rotary more than just a social club.

June is Rotary Fellowship Month

June is designated Rotary Fellowships Month to recognize the importance of international fellowship and goodwill among Rotarians with similar recreational and vocational interests, promote increased participation in fellowships, and increase understanding of this program.

What are the benefits for Rotarians in joining the Rotary Fellowships? Fellowship provides opportunities for Rotarians to make lasting friendships outside their own Club, District or country. Fellowships contribute to the advancement of world understanding and peace. Also, Fellowships serve as an incentive for attracting new members to Rotary and retaining our existing members. Indeed, Rotary Fellowship, together with the Rotarian Action Groups, serve as an effective tool in promoting membership development and should be actively promoted in our Districts.

There are many Fellowships that would be of interest to our members, and they are detailed on http://www.rotary.org/fellowships.
