Last week we welcomed Tara & Sebastian Hitzig to our weekly meeting to discuss Sebastian's heart transplant. Many rotarians also went last week to the District Breakfast at the Proud Bird and to the Car Show on Main street, hosted by El Segundo Chamber. This week we welcome our district governor Melody St. John to our weekly meeting. Please be sure to attend to help represent our club and make a positive impression. This coming Saturday is the District Picnic - Disco Picnic - at Seaside Lagoon in Redondo.  Please see our event page for details. We plan to have a group of Rotarians there; please bring a children's toy for their toy drive! Hope to see everyone there!
Upcoming reminders: our September meetings will be held at the Woman's Club on the corner of Mariposa and Standard. Our first meeting at the Club will be on Thursday, September 5th.

Meeting 8/15/19
Can you imagine something as simple as stepping on a toothpick leading to 4 cardiac arrests and a heart transplant over a 20 year time span? That’s the reality faced by Sebastian Hitzig. We were inspired and shocked by the miracle surgery and recovery that allowed Sebastian to be standing in the room with us. This topic was close to member Marsha’s heart (intentionally worded) due to her experience with her son Logan’s congenital heart problems from birth. Both Sebastian and Logan are standing strong today due to the miracles of modern medicine. In other news, Jim McLees brought us a flag from the Rotary Club of Northfield, Minnesota. He mentioned how everyone in the Northfield club exemplifies the “Minnesota Nice” stereotype!
District Breakfast
This year's Rotary District 5280 breakfast was held at the Proud Bird restaurant.  The speaker, Bow Tie Todd, talked about inclusion. He pointed out that we need to look around at the members in our club not only to see who is there, but also to see who is NOT there- meaning which groups (ages, gender, race, music preference, job types, favorite foods, etc) are not represented in our club. He told us that we can’t wait for someone else to reach out to the missing groups- we all need to do our part. Hakuna Matata- no worries about inviting people to the club. Don’t be afraid. Just reach out. We will be happier as the group grows.

Did You Know?                    #Randomfacts
Did you know that some cats are actually allergic to humans?

Though it’s uncommon—since humans bathe more than your typical animal, and don’t shed as much hair or skin—some animals can still be allergic to humans. (However, it’s most often because of the perfume or cologne we wear or the soap we use.)

THE SPONSOR OF A NEW MEMBER

The bylaws of Rotary clearly outline the procedure for a prospective member to be proposed for Rotary club membership. The "proposer" is the key person in the growth and advancement of Rotary. Without a sponsor, an individual will never have the opportunity to become a Rotarian.
The task of the proposer should not end merely by submitting a name to the club secretary or membership committee. Rotary has not established formal responsibilities for proposers or sponsors, however, by custom and tradition these procedures are recommended in many clubs. The sponsor should:
1. Invite a prospective member to several meetings prior to proposing the individual for membership.
2. Accompany the prospective new member to one or more orientation/informational meetings.
3. Introduce the new member to other club members each week for the first month.
4. Invite the new member to accompany the sponsor to neighboring clubs for the first make-up meeting to learn the process and observe the spirit of fellowship.
5. Ask the new member and spouse to accompany the sponsor to the club's social activities, dinners or other special occasions.
6. Urge the new member and spouse to attend the district conference with the sponsor.
7. Serve as a special friend to assure that the new member becomes an active Rotarian.
When the proposer follows these guidelines, Rotary becomes stronger with each new member.
