"DO YOUR LITTLE BIT OF GOOD WHERE YOU ARE. ITS THOSE BITS OF GOOD PUT TOGETHER THAT OVERWHELM THE WORLD." Desmond Tutu

April has been an exciting month for us. We started the month with a successful online zoom Mayors Good Friday Breakfast with over 80 participants. We raised through sponsorships and contributions from attendees over $4000. We are splitting these funds between the ED Foundation and the organization, The World Is Just A Book Away. We were fortunate to have James Owens, the founder and CEO of The World Is Just A Book Away as our featured speaker who told us about his organization. The World Is Just A Book Away (WIJABA) is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Santa Monica, CA that seeks to build leaders for the future by empowering children to change their own lives and communities through books, libraries, and educational programs. It has built over 100 libraries in the world for children. Also we had the pleasure of hearing inspirational music from the talented Daniel Nahmod.

As we move through April we are promoting our new fundraiser for Mother's Day which includes 2 wonderful gifts to purchase for the Moms in your life and at the same time contribute to the community. Be sure to advertise our website our website (www.rotaryelsegundo.org) and flyer to your friends and family. Treat the Mom's in your life to a Spa or Wine package.

We have received and are reviewing applications for our college scholarships awarded to El Segundo High School seniors. Our highest consideration in selecting recipients for the scholarships are students who have participated in Community Service during their high-school years or earlier.

Meeting 4/22
~ FEATURED SPEAKER ~ John Mulchaey, Director of The Observatories of the Carnegie Institution for Science. Since its founding in 1904, Carnegie Observatories has been a leader in research on the evolution of the universe, and is a prime reason why Southern California is the “world capital” of astronomy today. He discussed Southern California’s Leadership in Astronomy. Since the beginning of the 20th century, Southern California — and especially, Pasadena — has been the world’s leading center of astronomy research and discovery. This is in great part due to Carnegie Observatories, founded in 1904 by the solar astronomer George Ellery Hale (who also founded Mt. Wilson Observatory and Caltech, and who built the three largest telescopes in the early and mid-20th century). Carnegie Observatories is “where the universe was discovered”: where astronomer Edwin Hubble and his Carnegie colleagues found that our Milky Way isn’t the entire universe but one of billions of galaxies, and that the universe is continually expanding.
Today, Carnegie Observatories is uniquely dedicated to deep research on the evolution of the cosmos, and the training of new generations of astronomers. For the past 40 years most of this research has taken place at the Observatories’ large-telescope facilities in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, and has yielded astonishing discoveries about galaxy and star formation, dark matter, black holes, and much more. Dr. Mulchaey’s talk provided new insight into today's “golden age” of astronomy and the promises it holds for understanding our Universe.

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business and community life;

FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The Object of Rotary has not always been expressed in this manner. The original Constitution of 1906 had three objects: promotion of business interests, promotion of good fellowship and the advancement of the best interests of the community. By 1910 Rotary had five Objects, as increased emphasis was given to expanding Rotary. By 1915 there were six Objects. In 1918 the Objects were rewritten again and reduced to four. Four years later they had again grown to six and were revised again in 1927. Finally, at the 1935 Mexico City Convention the six Objects were restated and reduced to four. The last major change came in 1951 when the Objects were streamlined and changed to a single Object, which has four parts. The “ideal of service” is the key phrase in the Object of Rotary. This ideal is an attitude of being a thoughtful and helpful person in all of one’s endeavors. That’s what the Object truly means.

What does Rotary mean to me?        #ProudRotarians

Nancy Jacobson

What does Rotary mean to me?

In a nutshell, it has always been service to our community and
especially to our youth. I am a newer Rotarian (I just had my one year anniversary), but not new to Rotary. My first connection to the El Segundo Rotary Club was in the 1980s, when Ted was the liaison for my Girl Scout troop and the support we received from Rotary each year. That financial donation helped provide for troop wide activities and materials, as did the annual purchases of Girl Scout cookies at your meetings. Yes, that was just about 40 years ago! And ever since then I have always viewed Rotary as an organization that provided support to those who needed it. Add to that the many years of attending Movie in the Park, the Mayor’s Good Friday Breakfast, and other community-wide Rotary sponsored events in El Segundo. What is Rotary to me? It’s El Segundo, at its best! I know we’re an international organization, but so far I have only had local opportunities to assist with, so that’s where my focus is at this time. I am so proud to be a member of this wonderful organization and to be able to help in supporting our community in so many ways. Thank you, El Segundo Rotary, for being such an integral part of our community and being ready to step up in any moment to continue your support of El Segundo and the greater community around us. Whether it’s our youth, teachers, families, seniors – our Rotarians are there and I am proud to be one!

April is Maternal & Child Health Month
Rotary International's new monthly theme for April is Maternal and Child Health! Every day mothers risk their lives giving birth and millions of children die each year from treatable, preventable causes. At least 7 million children under the age of five die each year due to malnutrition, poor health care, and inadequate sanitation. To help reduce this rate, Rotary provides immunizations and antibiotics to babies, improves access to essential medical services, and supports trained health care providers for mothers and their children.

Rotary’s projects ensure sustainability by empowering the local community to take ownership of health care training programs. Maternal and Child Health Care is also recognized as one of Rotary’s Six Areas of Focus.
