Last week we welcomed our Rotary District governor Melody St. John to our meeting. She reviewed our club's goals and gave feedback and direction on where our club should be headed. Eloise presented her with a donation to the district to support polio eradication and other humanitarian causes. We also recognized the grandson of Judith and Roger Wilson as a Paul Harris Fellow. Thanks Elyse for putting together the humorous skit! It made for a fun meeting.
Coming up this week is speaker Dr. Walavan Sivakumar, Director of Neurosurgery at the Pacific Neuroscience Institute. He will be bringing us information about the new stroke center at the Little Company of Mary Medical Center. This facility will be the leading stroke center for the entire South Bay region and beyond. Julie Stolnac will bring raffle prizes, a joke and a short craft talk.
Upcoming reminders: our September meetings will be held at the Woman's Club on the corner of Mariposa and Standard. Our first meeting at the Club will be on Thursday, September 5th. Please note that this week we will be at the Masonic Lodge.

Melody St. John has been involved with Rotary throughout her entire life, from her days as the daughter of a Rotarian in South Dakota when women were not accepted as members. Today she utilizes her passion for youth programs and has been involved with Rotary Youth Exchange for over 25 years. She and her husband Paul have hosted over 22 students in their home from around the world.

In her professional life, St. John’s founded Video Tape Library, a stock footage image library, in 1984.  The library has over a million images compiled from over 250 cameramen form around the world.  Fun fact:  Her library was used in beta testing for a fledgling website called “YouTube.”
Did You Know?                    #Randomfacts
Did you know that continental plates drift at about the same rate as fingernails grow?

That is, about a millimeter a week. Tectonic plates, which divide the Earth’s continents, drift because of the heat that pushes its way up to the surface from the Earth’s core. This is the same activity that causes earthquakes and volcanic activity. At the rate they move, the tectonic plates end up drifting between one and two inches each year.

ROTARY YOUTH PROGRAMS

Rotary believes in developing the next generation of leaders. Our programs help younger leaders build leadership skills, expanse education and learn the value of service.

Rotaract clubs bring together people ages 18-30 to exchange ideas with leaders in the community, develop leadership and professional skills, and have fun through service.

Interact clubs bring together young people ages 12-18 to develop leadership skills and learn about the world through service projects and activities.

RYLA is a leadership development program for young people who want to learn new skills, build their confidence, and have fun. Events range from one-day seminars to weeklong camps.

Rotary Youth Exchange builds peace one young person at a time. Students learn a new language, discover another culture, and truly become global citizens. Exchanges for students ages 15-19 are sponsored by Rotary clubs in more than 100 countries.

New Generations Service Exchange is a short-term, customizable program for university students and professionals up to age 30. Participants can design exchanges that combine their professional goals with a humanitarian project.
