To me, Rotary is about changing lives: individuals, communities, and the world. It is about being part of a larger whole, with over a million members worldwide doing small efforts that collectively have a large impact.
Although I am a newer member of this club, as a kid, I spent several years involved with Rotary as part of the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. I got to meet other students from my district, as well as the inbound exchanges. I saw how those people were impacted by their Rotary experience, and I was surprised how much I grew as a person during my year in France. I became more extroverted, learned to love meeting and getting to know new people, and discovered a passion for wanting to learn about the world. I still speak fluent French, and learned so much about the people and culture of France. I personally experienced who Rotary can change the life of an individual.
The activities of our club make El Segundo a better place, whether through monetary support, service projects, or through events that create lifelong memories such Movie in the Park or the watermelon eating contest. I see my kids enjoying these events, and learning to enjoy serving others. I saw the impact of my host Rotary club in France as well (although they usually were wearing suits- Rotary was more formal then).
Most of all, I am amazed at how Rotary changes the world. From targeted projects to help with schools, to broader efforts to eradicate polio, we make a difference in so many lives. When I was in India in 2016, I took a picture to share with Carolyne of Rotarians vaccinating children against polio at the Lotus Temple in New Delhi. It was proof that even small efforts from our club can make a huge impact in the world.
