Movie in the Park was AMAZING! Congratulations to Lily Craig and her team for making this years event absolutely awesome! We had great beer & wine, ticket, and raffle sales, Spiderman and Gwen were there, we had train rides, a climbing wall, bounce houses, lots of sweet treats, a photo backdrop, and lots of food and items from our wonderful vendors and sponsors. It was a lot of fun and a big thanks goes out to Lily and her team, and to all of our sponsors, volunteers, workers, and our own members. Special thanks to Owen Smigelski and Hailey Hansen for their appearances as Spiderman and Gwen! You guys did a great job! We all worked so hard to make this a success and it was enjoyed by our community. Thank you to everyone who was involved.

Movie in the Park 2019
On Saturday we held our annual Movie in the park event. We had a great turnout of people who enjoyed all of the festivities. There was lots of food and drinks and lots of tasty treats, lots of activities for the kids, and characters in costume for great photos. Our amazing sponsors had lots to offer and our own club members all worked together to make this a successful community event. Thank you to Lily Craig, our event chair, and her committee who spent months planning this. Thank you also to all of our Sponsors and to all those who attended. Funds from our event will help Rotary in our mission of eradicating Polio, supporting the Ed foundation and the El Segundo School District, our local Police and Fire Departments, and numerous other groups, organizations, and charities that rely on our funding and support. On behalf of our Rotary club, we thank our wonderful community for coming together and giving us the opportunity to give back and for supporting and attending our event!

Dickie Van Breene

Dickie Van Breene has been an El Segundo Rotarian since 2002 and was president in 2017-2018. She joined Rotary when she was an administrator with the El Segundo Unified School District, where she worked for over 20 years. She was principal at Richmond Street School for the last 10 years of her career at ESUSD. She has had the honor and pleasure of either being a teacher or administrator to the children of many of her fellow Rotarians. She’s happy to say not one of those children was ever sent to the principal’s office!

After retiring from education, Dickie became a Realtor and was mentored by one of the very best, Shiela Fowler! Dickie and her husband, Mark Burton, team up to sell real estate in the South Bay and enjoy the opportunity to work together.

Dickie heads up two important Rotary projects, which are near and dear to her heart. The first is the upcoming backpack project. The project was Dean Seligman’s idea when he was Rotary president and Dickie has continued implementing it since that time. The other project is the Gently Used Book Drive. About 1,000 books are collected thanks to donations from our ESUSD students and with support from our fellow Rotarian, Dr. Melissa Moore.

Dickie’s latest passion is being a grandmother to her first grandbaby! She says being a grandmother is one of the best things in life! She also appreciates being a member of El Segundo Rotary and appreciates the kind and caring people who make up our club. We all know it’s the very best club in California!
Did You Know?                    #Randomfacts
In honor of Barbie's 60th year - Did you know that barbie was created by an engineer who used to work for the Pentagon?

Barbie designer Jack Ryan began his career as an engineer making missiles for the Pentagon. Eventually he was hired away by Mattel for his "space-age savvy" and knowledge of materials (meaning, he'd be able to make high-quality, well-functioning toys). His designs helped give Barbie her twistable waist and "click click" knee joints. Happy 60th Birthday Barbie!

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

In some areas of the world weekly Rotary club meetings begin with all members standing and reciting the Object of Rotary. This statement, which comes from the Constitution of Rotary, is frequently seen on a wall plaque in Rotarians' offices or place of business.
The Object of Rotary is "to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise." The statement then lists four areas by which this "ideal of service" is fostered: "through the development of acquaintance as the opportunity for service; the promotion of high ethical standards in business and professions; through service in one's personal, business and community life; and the advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace."
The Object of Rotary has not always been expressed in this manner. The original Constitution of 1906 had three objects: promotion of business interests, promotion of good fellowship and the advancement of the best interests of the community By 1910 Rotary had five Objects as increased emphasis was given to expanding Rotary. By 1915 there were six Objects. In 1918 the Objects were rewritten again and reduced to four. Four years later they had again grown to six and were revised again in 1927.
Finally, at the 1935 Mexico City Convention the six Objects were restated and reduced to four. The last major change came in 1951, when the "Objects" were streamlined and changed to a single "Object" which is manifested in four separate ways. The "ideal of service" is the key phrase in the Object of Rotary. This ideal is an attitude of being a thoughtful and helpful person in all of one's endeavors. That's what the Object truly means.
