Twisted Tales Haunted House is now less than a month out! Ticket sales have already begun and are off to a great start from sales made at the Richmond Fair this past weekend. Thank you to those who helped out! Parks & Rec is now seeking out volunteers to work in many different areas of this production including in make-up, character portrayal, in construction and in manning the event itself. If you or someone you know is interested in helping out, please contact Eloise and let her know. So far this event is looking to be perhaps the biggest event for Halloween this year in our community.  There has been considerable interest and curiosity from residents and we anticipate that the event will be a huge success for our club.
On Oct 5th stop by the ADM for their Hot Wheels event. The Rotary will be hosting a canned food drive for C.A.S.E. and we need your support. Grab something out of your pantry and swing by and participate!
Last week we hosted the Rotary Newlywed Game at the Women's Club and we nearly choked on our drinks and peed our pants laughing so hard over the funny responses from our couples. I hope that Eloise is right when she told me afterwards that "What happens in Rotary, stays in Rotary".  It perhaps goes without saying that for this case all ideas expressed in that meeting are certainly not the views held by the Rotary Club itself. If anyone was offended or outraged, please accept our most humble apologies for being so inappropriate. I do have to admit, though, that it was a lot of fun. ..even if I embarrassed myself completely! LOL
On Sept 12th we welcomed Kevin Smith and Sandy Jacobs to our weekly meeting to talk about Guaymas and give us a little background about themselves. We love our sister city in Mexico and hope that we can continue fostering a good relationship with them. Thank you both for sharing your stories!
This Thursday we will hear from Jose Mendez who will discuss Kurn Hattin Homes, a charity based in Westminster, Vermont. We will meet at the Women's Club on Mariposa and Standard. This will be our last meeting at this location. Starting October 3rd we will be back at the Masonic Lodge. We hope to see you there!

Twisted Tales - Volunteers Needed!

Richmond Street Fair
On Saturday Sept 21, 2019, the El Segundo Kiwanis Club hosted its 44th annual Richmond Street Fair. The El Segundo Rotary set up a booth and sold tickets for the upcoming Twisted Tales Haunted House event. There was a lot of interest and it was well received by the community! The most popular feature was the Twisted Tales Photo Booth where many people took pictures and posted them to social media. We sold many wristbands and we were successful in raising awareness for our upcoming event. Big thank you to those who helped with setup, cleanup, and running the booth.  Special thank you to the El Segundo High Cheerleaders who stopped by to give us a shout!

Newlywed Game 9/19/19
Welcome to the Newlywed Game - El Segundo Rotary style! This week we celebrated the recent engagements of Carolyne & Owen, and Marisol & Matthew, and paid tribute to long time married couples Eloise & Jose, and Sandy & Karl by battling head to head in the classic Newlywed game. Hosted by Marsha and scored by Linda from the El Segundo Chamber, private details about our couples were hilariously extracted and were at times TMI and sometimes completely inappropriate for our innocent Rotarian ears. There were funny responses from couples when asked about their relationship and we learned a whole lot more than many of us probably would have really liked to have know about what kinds of things our couples do behind closed doors. There were confessions of getting romantic in college dorm rooms. In the back of cars or in the bathroom of a local bar. One couple even admitted to relations at the Rotary Club itself which raised a few eyebrows and made everyone think "here? today? no! ...or at the lodge?". It was a confusing brief moment.
Luckily there were no reports of casualties after the meeting was over: of members giving themselves a heart attack from laughing so hard or of couples splitting up due to disputes over answers or perceived poor performance. We all went home in one piece pondering if what we just heard was really the truth or just said for a good laugh. Either way it was all good.
Final scores were as follows: Carolyne & Owen tied Eloise & Jose for a distant third place with 30 points each, Sandy & Karl came in second with 60 points, and Marisol & Matthew won first place with a whopping 65 points! The winning couple received matching sleepwear which I imagine will be utilized very very soon, if not already.
Best wishes to all of the couples, and thank you Marsha and Linda for your hard work in preparing for what was one of the most hilarious meetings we've had! Sending lots of love to Marisol & Matthew who's wedding will be held on Oct 5th! Our wonderful Rotary club wishes you both all the love and happiness in the world!

Meeting 9/12/19
This week we welcomed Rotarians Kevin Smith and Sandy Jacobs to our meeting. Kevin spoke about our club's relationship with our sister city Guaymas in Mexico. Sandy gave us a short talk about her life story and provided a joke and the raffle prizes.

Sandra (Sandy) Garrard Jacobs

Sandra Garrard was born on January 20, 1942 to Frank and Betty Garrard in Covington, KY on the banks of the mighty Ohio River. Her family, seeking the American Dream, packed their 1952 Chrysler and headed west.  She entered the newly constructed El Segundo Junior High School (now the District Offices) in 1954, and graduated from El Segundo High School in 1960. She attended University of the Pacific in Stockton, California graduating in 1964, earning a BA in Group Work and Recreation and Elementary Education.  She met her husband Karl while at UOP.  They were married in 1964 and have a daughter, Jennifer and a grandson, Jacob.

Sandy & Karl returned to El Segundo in 1981 primarily so that their daughter could benefit from the El Segundo School System.  Their daughter Jennifer graduated ESHS in 1987 and their grandson Jacob followed her in 2013.

Sandy entered the El Segundo Business Community as owner of the House of Cards.  She also served as President of South Bay Welders Supply, Inc. a family-owned business as well as co-owner and founder of Pinsational, a jewelry and cloisonné pin company.

Serving as the first female President of the El Segundo Chamber of Commerce in 1989-1990 and again in 1993-1994, she coordinated efforts of the organization’s many committees with particular success in the areas of Chamber/Local Government relations and Economic Development.

In 1996, 200 years after the election of her Great-Grandfather James Garrard as 2ndGovernor of Kentucky, Sandy was elected to the El Segundo City Council serving as the first female Mayor 1996-1998 and Mayor Pro-tem 1998-2004.

Now actively retired, she serves as Past President Advisor to the Chamber of  Commerce Board of Directors and regularly attends the weekly Rotary Meetings. As time allows, she loves to read, knit and quilt.  In 2007 she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease .  Fortunately she has been blessed with good Doctors and medical care through UCLA and has been able to meet the challenges that each day brings.

Did You Know?                    #Randomfacts
Did you know that it rains diamonds on Saturn and Jupiter?

It turns out, these two planets rain down some major bling bling. Atmospheric data indicates that the gaseous planets of Saturn and Jupiter experience hail storms of diamonds, due to lighting storms that turn methane in the atmosphere into soot, which then hardens into graphite and then into diamonds as it falls. A scientist told the BBC that the largest diamond "rain drops" would be about a centimeter in diameter. Hello, sign me up and take me there! Something like this I gotta see for myself!
Fun Facts                   #RandomfactsaboutRotary
WORLD COMMUNITY SERVICE

World Community Service is the Rotary program by which a club or district in one country provides humanitarian assistance to a club in another country. Typically the aid goes to a developing community where the Rotary project will help raise the standard of living and the quality of life. The ultimate object of World Community Service is to build goodwill and understanding among peoples of the world.
One important way to find a club in some other part of the world which needs help on a worthy project is to use the WCS Projects Exchange, a list of dozens of worthy activities in developing areas. The exchange list is maintained in the RI Secretariat in Evanston and is readily available upon request. It outlines projects, provides estimated costs and gives names of the appropriate contacts.
Clubs which need assistance, or are seeking another club to help with a humanitarian project, such as building a clinic, school, hospital, community water well, library or other beneficial activity, may register their needs. Clubs seeking a desirable World Community Service project may easily review the list of needs registered in the Projects Exchange. Thus, the exchange provides a practical way to link needs with resources.
Every Rotary club is urged to undertake a new World Community Service project each year. The WCS Projects Exchange list is an excellent tool to find a real need, a project description and cooperating club in a developing area. The job then is to "go to work" to complete the project, and at the same time build bridges of friendship and world understanding.
