Meeting 8/8/19
This week we welcomed fellow Rotarian and El Segundo Police Chief Bill Whalan to our weekly meeting. He introduced our new City Manager Scott Mitnick. He discussed the six month crime report for 2019 for the City of El Segundo. Many crimes included home break-ins and car thefts. Much police time was also spent dealing with the homeless problem in our city. Please click on the photo page to see a copy of the report.
We also heard from Rotarian Justin Mularz who gave us a brief craft talk. He also brought raffle prizes.
Rotary & Polio

Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 30 years. Our goal of ridding the world of this disease is closer than ever.

As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we've reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent since our first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979.

We've helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries. So far, Rotary has contributed more than $1.8 billion toward eradicating the disease worldwide.

Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. But it’s crucial to continue working to keep other countries polio-free. If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year.

Hi! I’m Justin and for the last few months I have been a member of the El Segundo Rotary Club. I’m a resident of Hawthorne California where I live with my wife Kelly and my children, Abigail and Calvin. I love baseball and the Dodgers and try to drag my family to at least 10 games a year. Thankfully I have converted my wife to a full-fledged fan so it’s not much of a struggle. My daughter Abby is 9, going into 4thgrade and is an aspiring Irish dancer. My son Calvin is 5 and has just begun his Jiu-Jitsu career while baseball is in the offseason. He is also starting kindergarten in the fall and I still can’t believe it; they grow so fast.  I also love to read, mostly fantasy books by Brandon Sanderson, George Martin or Christopher Paolini, Build Lego (with and without my kids), and play games (also with and without my kids).  This next part will come as a shock but my family and I also love to travel. In 2017 we went to Germany, The Czech Republic, and France. We visited Paris, Munich, Berlin and Prague; everything was so beautiful we plan to return in the near future. In 2018 we road tripped through a few states and to the Grand Canyon, Antelope Canyon and Slide Rock. It was a great adventure and I can’t wait to see more National Parks.

I currently work with my former Rotary President father Wayne, and together we run Mularz Construction, soon to be renamed Marz Construction. We generally focus on new home builds and large-scale remodels in the beach cities and surrounding areas. You can find our website at www.marz.construction and our Instagram @marz_construction. We can also be contacted at 310/227-3695 or 310/643-9292. Feel free to contact us regarding any residential construction questions, even if we can’t directly help, we can point you in the right direction.

Did you know that China uses an elite gaggle of geese as police?

Police forces in the Xinjiang province have been sending geese officers out on patrol since 2012. Law enforcement agents described the geese as a “highlight of stability maintenance work” and said they had proved themselves “better than dogs” in tackling crime.

“Geese are very brave. They spread their wings and will attack any strangers entering someone’s home,” said Mr Zhang, the local police chief.  The birds were like “a radar that does not need power”, he added. “In some ways, they are more useful than dogs. A household normally keeps one dog but an intruder can throw a drugged treat to kill the dog. Geese are normally kept in groups and they have poor eyesight at night making it very difficult for intruders to poison them.”

Authorities in Shawan county say their goose-stepping recruits have at least brought a measure of security to the troubled region. One gaggle of police geese reportedly managed to snare a man who had broken into the local police headquarters to take a motorbike. After drugging two police dogs and climbing over the wall, the man was about to make his getaway when he came face-to-face with some 20 feathered “gatekeepers.” The geese fanned their wings and began shrieking when they saw the stranger. The duty officer woke up and the thief was caught red handed.

THE 4-WAY TEST

One of the most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics in the world is the Rotary "4-Way Test." It was created by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor in 1932 when he was asked to take charge of the Chicago based Club Aluminum Company, which was facing bankruptcy. Taylor looked for a way to save the struggling company mired in depression-caused financial difficulties. He drew up a 24-word code of ethics for all employees to follow in their business and professional lives. The 4-Way Test became the guide for sales, production, advertising and all relations with dealers and customers, and the survival of the company was credited to this simple philosophy.
Herb Taylor became president of Rotary International during 1954-55. The 4-Way Test was adopted by Rotary in 1943 and has been translated into more than 100 languages and published in thousands of ways. The message should be known and followed by all Rotarians.
"Of the things we think, say or do:
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"
